The house that is now Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine was originally built in 1905 by the Lewis Hass family. It was converted to a funeral home in 1930’s by J.O. Heft and his son, Frank. In 1954 Frank’s nephew, Robert “Bob” White became a partner and in 1963, Bob and his wife Dorothy purchased the business. In 1968 an addition was built onto the west side of the funeral home for living quarters. In 1971, Phil Fouts began working with Bob White. In 1973 Bob purchased the Barrett Funeral Home in Dunlap. In 1980, Phil and his wife Anita purchased both of the funeral homes. In 1994 their son, Paul, joined them in the business. In 1998 Paul and his wife Beth purchased both funeral homes. They added on a chapel addition in 2003. This funeral home has been a private family business and in its 80+ year history has been owned by just two families.

The funeral home in Dunlap was originally located on 10th and Jeroleman Streets. In the spring of 2007 Paul and Beth purchased the existing 4-plex that was built on the corner of Highway 30 and Court Streets and converted two apartments into a new chapel area. The funeral home was officially transferred to this location in the fall of 2007. Two apartments were retained and are currently rented out to two different families.

Paul graduated from Iowa State University in December of 1983 with degree in Business Administration. He then graduated from Mortuary School in Houston, Texas in February of 1985.  Paul did his internship in Des Moines at Westover and Dunn’s Funeral Homes and then worked for Wass Funeral Homes in Akron, Iowa and Alcester, Beresford, and Centerville, South Dakota. Paul and Beth returned to Woodbine in June of 1994.  Paul keeps busy with serving on various community groups and church groups. He also enjoys golfing and riding his motorcycle.

Beth graduated from Buena Vista University with a secondary education teaching degree in social sciences. Beth does a large share of the office work, helps with funerals and visitation and she enjoys substitute teaching when the funeral home schedule allows it.  Beth also serves on various community groups and church groups. She enjoys gardening, music, and walking her dog.

Paul and Beth have three children that have graduated from Woodbine High School. Brianne is an Iowa State University graduate with a business/marketing degree with a minor in psychology.
