Marie Block-Smith

Marie Rose (Kloewer) Block Smith was born on October 20, 1923, to Frank and Anna (Rau) Kloewer in Westphalia, Iowa. She graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School. On May 12, 1943, Marie married Herman Block. The couple farmed near Earling until 1956, when they started farming near Dunlap. The family moved to Dunlap in 1964. Herman died in 1965. In 1990 Marie married Perry Smith. Marie cleaned houses and worked at Dubuque packing plant in Denison.

Marie was a member of St Patrick's Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters. She loved to quilt and visit with family and friends. She also bowled on a league in Dunlap and Denison and played Yahtzee with her sisters.

Marie died on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at the Dunlap Specialty Care at the age of 94 years, seven months, and 10 days.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Herman Block and Perry Smith; three children, Tom (Peggy) Block, Jane Eggers and Marsha Grindle; two granddaughters, Whitney Anne Cloud and Peggy Arlene Block; two brothers, Eugene and Roman Kloewer; and sister, Rita Leinen. She is survived by five children, Diane (David) Houston of Omaha, Nebraska; Charlene (Ralph) Yaple of Lenexa, Kansas; Dean Block and Rod (Barb) Block all of Dunlap, Iowa; Sherry (Larry) Baldwin of Neola, Iowa; two sons-in-law, Larry Eggers of Omaha, Nebraska and David Grindle of Soldier, Iowa; 19 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; six siblings, Jerry (Pauline) Kloewer of Harlan, Iowa, Sister Fran Kloewer of Omaha, Nebraska, Margaret (Raphael) Grote of Dunlap, Iowa, Stella Bexten of Manilla, Iowa, Charles (Rosemary) Kloewer of Mapleton, Iowa, Mike (Marlys) Kloewer of Manilla, Iowa; sister-in-law, Kathleen Kloewer of Panama, Iowa and many other relatives and friends.
