Milton LeRoy Fields was born on April 3, 1937, to Ivan and Opal (Atwood) Field on a family farm north of Spalding, Nebraska. In 1957, they moved to Red Bluff, California. Upon completing high school, he returned to Spalding to eventually marry his sweetheart, Shirley Crosby, on April 19, 1958.
