Leo Alan Schwertley was born on November 1, 1948, to Leo Francis and Barbara (Withem) Schwertley in Pisgah, Iowa. He was raised in Logan and graduated from Logan Magnolia High School in 1966. He then attended Iowa State University for one year and went to Denver for electronic schooling. He returned to Logan and began working at Union Pacific Railroad. Alan married Pam Johnson at the United Methodist Church in Woodbine on December 31, 1969. Twelve days later he was drafted into the United States Army. He proudly served his country for 18 months. After his honorable discharge he returned to Omaha and continued working at UP until his retirement on May 5, 2009.

Alan was a member of the United Methodist Church in Modale, Iowa. He was also a member of American Legion, the Masons, Pyrotechnic Guild International (PGI), and the National Fireworks Association. He enjoyed photography, garden tractor pulling and pizza.

Alan died on Monday, August 10, 2015, at his home in Modale at the age of 66 years, nine months, and nine days.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Oscar Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Pam Schwertley of Modale, Iowa; three siblings, Tom Schwertley and his wife Shirley of Logan, Iowa, Bill Schwertley and his wife Susan of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Jane (Schwertley) Dunn of Dow City, IA; mother-in-law, Claribel Johnson of Woodbine, Iowa; special niece, Sara and her husband Clay Malaney and their son, Nicholas of San Diego, California; two dogs, Willow and Gizmo; and many other relatives and friends.
