Alvera Steinkuehler

Alvera Anna (Asmus) Steinkuehler was born January 7, 1921, to John and Anna (Prosch) Asmus in Buck Grove, Iowa. She received her schooling in Buck Grove and Manilla, Iowa. Alvera worked for area families helping with various duties. On December 9, 1938, Alvera married Alvin Steinkuehler at the Lutheran Church parsonage in Denison, Iowa. The couple lived in the four county area before moving to Dunlap in 1963. Alvera was a waitress at the Sugar Bowl, Larson's Café, Dean's Lounge, and the Grill in Dunlap and also the Corn Palace in Woodbine. Alvin died on February 17, 1997.

Alvera enjoyed cooking and cleaning. She always looked forward to having coffee with her daughters in the afternoon.

Alvera died on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at her home in Dunlap at the age of 91 years, three months and 25 days.

Alvera was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alvin Steinkuehler; son, William Steinkuehler; son-in-law, Big Will Buter; four grandsons, Mark Schwarte, Donnie Friedrichsen, Lil' Will Buter and Mike Kline; four great grandchildren, Alicia Kline, Stephanie McClure, Patrick Brotherson and Jacob Stephens; brother, Vic Asmus, and step-brother, Bob Maynard. She is survived by her five daughters, Dorothy Buter, Lois Ferguson and special friend Jack Kline, Mary Messenger and Alice Schwarte all of Dunlap, Iowa, Bonnie and her husband Larry Shafer of Woodbine, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Pam Steinkuehler of Woodbine, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 65 great grandchildren; 51 great-great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
