Arthur William Dorland was born April 3, 1917, to Aubrey Phillip and Harriett C. (Buchanan) Dorland in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Art attended country school, and he graduated in 1935 from Abraham Lincoln High School. Art worked as a farm hand, and then was drafted into the army in 1942. Art proudly served his country in WWII and flew planes for the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to work as a farmer on the same farm he worked prior to his military service. On February 4, 1950, Art married Hazel Hull. The couple rented a farm between Council Bluffs and Treynor for four years then moved to Underwood for twelve years, finally settling in the Woodbine area farming for eighteen years before retiring. Hazel died in February of 1998. Art married Florence Brockelsby Miller. She died in January of 2007.
Art was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the VFW in Woodbine. He volunteered at the Senior Citizens Meal Site and organized the Sunday meals. Art enjoyed all things mechanical, traveling and history. He was also an avid woodworker. Most importantly, he loved his children and grandchildren. Art and Hazel traveled to Alaska, New Mexico, Mississippi and California doing volunteer work for six years.
Art died on July 9, 2015, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine at the age of 98 years, three months, and six days.
Art was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; and sister, Lois (McManus) Miller. He is survived by his son, Steven (Delores) Dorland of Missouri Valley, Iowa; two daughters, Jane (David) Lesch of Hoffman Estates, Illinois and Joyce (Robert) Martin of Guthrie, Oklahoma; 13 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Zita of Petaluma, California, Martha Chambers of Denver, Colorado; and many other relatives and friends.
