Audrey Cohrs

Audrey Mae (Marshall) Cohrs was born July 27, 1922, to William and Mary (Lizer) Marshall near Magnolia, Iowa. In 1932 Audrey's mother became ill and Audrey and her sister were sent to live with relatives. Audrey was 11 when her mother died. She returned to live with her father and brother in Ute, Iowa. She graduated as valedictorian from Ute High School in 1939, and received her teaching certificate at the age of 18 from Woodbine Normal School. She taught at a school near Moorhead in 1940. In 1942 she attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. She was active in Future Teachers of America and was a member of the Lambda Delta Sigma Honor Society. She graduated in 1944 and then taught in Gilbert and Missouri Valley, Iowa. Audrey married Herbert Cohrs on June 26, 1949, at the RLDS Church in Moorhead. The couple made their home on the Cohrs family farm west of Woodbine. The farm was given the Century Farm recognition in 2003. Audrey returned to teaching and to school at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska. In 1968 she received her Bachelor's Degree. She taught at Pisgah, Woodbine and Logan-Magnolia. Audrey retired in 1985 after 30 years of teaching. Herb died on March 10, 2007.

Audrey was baptized in the RLDS Church in Woodbine in 1933. She was very active in her church teaching Sunday school, was the Director of Education for both the Woodbine Branch and the Woodbine District, held offices, and many other positions. She was currently a member of the Followers of Christ in Woodbine. She enjoyed traveling ~ especially fishing trips to Canada with Herb. She also enjoyed her flower garden and house plants. She was an avid reader, wrote poetry and enjoyed embroidery work. Audrey enjoyed volunteering at the Welcome Center and taught at the country school during the school program at the museum. Audrey loved her church, her home and her family.

Audrey died January 27, 2016, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 93 years and six months.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herb; infant son, Ronald in 1951; and brother, Wayne Marshall. She is survived by her three children David (Becky) Cohrs of Woodbine, IA, Mary (Kirk) Kersten of Logan, IA, Bev (Scott) Ganzhorn of Woodbine, IA; 12 grandchildren; 33+ great grandchildren; sister, Alice Pixler of Whiting, IA; and other relatives and friends.
