Avery Thompson

Avery Junior Thompson was born January 27, 1933, to Avery and Rose (Cooper) Thompson in Chalco, Nebraska. When he was four the family moved to Dunlap and he attended the Dunlap Public School. Junior worked for area farmers and in 1951 and 1952 he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. After his discharge he worked for his dad at Merritt Mill in Dunlap. He then worked for Thompson Brothers as a truck driver. Junior married Verna Merritt on May 3, 1957, in Luverne, Minnesota. The couple continued to live in Dunlap and Junior worked for Ed Bonsall and Johnny Pedersen. He then started working at IBP and was there until his retirement in 1999.

Junior liked to fish, hunt, hunt mushrooms, and garden. He also enjoyed spending time at the Dunlap Locker and going for rides in the country to see the crops.

Junior died on May 29, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa at the age of 78 years, four months, and two days.

Junior was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Brett Thompson; five brothers, Ward, Earl, Art, Don and Clarence Thompson; and three sisters, Helen Talbert, Rosemary Jacobsen, and Ruth Bonsall. He is survived by his wife, Verna Thompson of Dunlap, Iowa; two children, Peggy (Rick) Pauley of Earling, Iowa and Clay Thompson of Dunlap, Iowa; three grandchildren, Nicole, Tara and Derek; one great granddaughter, Lexi; brother, Jack (Carol) Thompson of Henderson, Nevada; three sisters-in-law, Darlene Thompson and Lois Thompson both of Dunlap, Iowa; Cindy Merritt of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and many other relatives and friends.
