Billy Benson was born on June 7, 1945, in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Clarence and Eithel (Parrack) Benson. He grew up in Honey Creek, Iowa and attended school in Missouri Valley, Iowa. After graduation, Bill was drafted into the United States Army and served our country in the Vietnam War. Following his honorable discharge, Bill worked at Vickers Hydraulics in Omaha, Nebraska and helped his dad on the farm. In October of 1984, he was united in marriage to Lori Sorey in Logan, Iowa and they were blessed with two children, Jackie and Jason. Bill enjoyed farming and spent time working for Hugh Hanks and for the Harper family. He also worked at the elevator in Woodbine until his retirement in 2010. Even after retiring he helped Tony Smith on the farm.
Bill was known for his love of Hot Rod Tractor Pulls, where he showcased not only his passion for machinery but also his competitiveness and spirit. The thrill of the county fairs, particularly the Spencer Fair, held a special place in his heart, drawing him back year after year. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping and fishing with his family. Many hours were spent on the farm restoring four tractors that he was very proud of. Most of all, Bill treasured the time spent with the ones he loved.
Bill died on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha at the age of 80 years, two months and 22 days.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; stepmom, Lillian Benson; sister, Lavonne Wertz and her husband Laverne; brother-in-law, Bob Davis; and niece, Jean Lujan. He is survived by his wife, Lori of Woodbine; daughter Jackie and her husband Joe Beckmann of Bennington, Nebraska; son, Jason Benson of Woodbine; grandchildren, Rayne, Beau, Olivia and Scarlett; sister, Sally Davis of Underwood, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
