Bill Hicks

William Leslie Hicks was born on July 24, 1954, to Orville and Ila (Rief) Hicks in Denison, Iowa. Bill was raised in the Dunlap area and graduated from Dunlap High School in 1972. On April 20, 1974, Bill married the love of his life, Gail Schwarz, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Bill drove truck until 1983. He then went to work for Cogdill's in Dow City and later in Dunlap for a total of 33 years.

Bill was a long time member of St. John Lutheran Church. He loved his collectables which included: toy tractors, hot wheels, barbed wire, hats, belt buckles, hat pins, and HO trains. He also enjoyed restoring toy and peddle tractors. Bill enjoyed the sport of Stock Car Racing. Bill loved going to car shows, was involved with the Screwdriver Care Club in Dunlap, and he announced at tractor pulls at the 4-County Fair for a number of years. Bill and Gail were both very active with the Dunlap Fire and Rescue Unit. They worked as medics at the Clay County Fair for over 20 years.

Bill died on Friday, February 2, 2018, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 63 years, six months, and nine days.

In addition to his parents Bill was preceded in death by his son, Andrew Hicks. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Gail Hicks of Dunlap, Iowa; sons, Will (Stephanie) Hicks of Waukee, Iowa, Chad (Tina Rudd) Hicks of Dunlap; daughter-in-law, Cassie and her husband Tony Frerk of Hartley, Iowa; eight grandchildren; sister, Rita Stolz of Dunlap, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
