Brayden Lance Shumate was born June 30, 2001, to Ella Fremont and Jason Shumate in Denison, Iowa. He was raised in Dunlap and was a 7th grade student at the Boyer Valley Community School. Brayden lived on the farm and enjoyed all the work associated with the farm. Brayden fought cancer for nearly three years. In this battle he always enjoyed hot wings following his blood work or his chemotherapy treatments.

Brayden was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Dunlap. He enjoyed baseball, football, riding his dirt bike, watching WWE wrestling, playing pool and video games. His favorite teams were the Boyer Valley Bulldogs, Detroit Lions and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Brayden died on Friday, April 17, 2015, at the Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa at the age of 13 years, nine months, and 18 days.

Brayden was preceded in death by his great grand-parents, Walter R. and Ruth Ann Shumate and Bob Nuzum. He is survived by his father, Jason Shumate of Dunlap, Iowa; mother, Ella Fremont of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two brothers, Gianni and Joey Shumate both of Blair, Nebraska; sister, Brittney Shumate of Dunlap, Iowa; grandparents, Butch and Rita Shumate of Dunlap, Iowa; great grandmother, Nettie Nuzum of Woodbine, Iowa; two uncles, Eric Shumate and his girlfriend Rachel of Dunlap, Iowa, Walter Shumate and his wife Melissa and their children, Fenix, Lela and Ama Bella all of Bellevue, Nebraska; aunt, Jackie Shafer of Dow City, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
