Burton Moores

January 28, 1932 — March 8, 2017

Woodbine, Iowa

Burton Dean Moores was born January 28, 1932, to Alma Edith (Browning) and E. R. "Dick" Moores on the family farm southeast of Woodbine. The family eventually moved into Woodbine, where Burton started school in the first grade. The family returned to the farm when Burton was in 7th grade, so he completed 7th and 8th grade at Meadow Brook Country School. Burton finished school and graduated with the Woodbine High School class of 1949. Burton proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a Radarman during the Korean War from January 1950 to May of 1953. Most of his time was aboard the U.S.S. Badoeng Strait which was a small aircraft carrier. Burton married Hattie Jean Harper on December 26, 1954. After several different jobs over the years, Burton was offered employment with the Harrison County REC. Burton worked there for over 29 years retiring at the age of 62. Burton often told Hattie how blessed he was to get to work with such good people! It was like a big happy family!

Burton was baptized in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1954 and was ordained to the office of Priest of the Aaronic Order in 1976. He served in this capacity for the rest of his life. Burton's passions were God and Christ, and his family was a close second. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing baseball. He also enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's activities whenever possible. Burton sang for many funerals and weddings. He was grateful that God gave him that talent that he could bring a ministry of music to many families. He also served over 20 years on the Woodbine Fire Department and was a Charter member of the Woodbine Noteables.

Burton died on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at his home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 85 years, one month and eight days.

Burton was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dessie Darlene Moores; brother, Wilbur Romaine Moores; and two sisters-in-law, Helen (Poe) Moores and Yvonne (Johnson) Moores. He is survived by his wife, Hattie Moores of Woodbine, Iowa; four children, Jeffrey (Suzanne) Moores of Naperville, Illinois, Pamela (Paul) McKinney of Trabuco Canyon, California, Brenda (Joe) Williams of Independence, Missouri and Michael (Tracy) Moores of Lake Lotawana, Missouri; 14 grandchildren; brother, Gale Moores of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
