Calvin Franklin Johnsen was born September 2, 1927, to John C. and Bess Marie (Jenson) Johnsen in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was raised in Underwood and then the family moved southeast of Logan, Iowa. The family moved into Logan in 1942, and Calvin graduated from the Logan High School in 1947. Calvin married Thelma Tate on February 28, 1948, at the Christian Church in Logan. The couple farmed near Underwood with Calvin's uncle until 1950. They then moved to the Plummer place and to their place on Highway 44 in 1975.

Calvin was a member of the Logan Christian Church. On May 30, 1971, Calvin was baptized with his two older daughters. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and served as the Master of the Lodge. He served on the Lo-Ma School Board and with the Harrison County Cattlemen's. Calvin received the cattlemen of the year award in 2000. The couple belonged to a dance club as well. Calvin loved being on the farm and working with his cattle and hogs. He particularly enjoyed raising Holstein bucket calves.

Calvin died on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at the Westmont Care Center in Logan at the age of 84 years, seven months, and eight days.

Calvin was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lynn Johnsen, and two sisters, Olive Magnussen and Shirley Bosworth. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Johnsen of Logan, IA; six children, Jim Johnsen and his wife Christie and Jerry Johnsen and his wife Mary all of Logan, IA, Joann Thompson and Raymond Grundy of Denver, CO, Jenette and her husband Gale Dickinson of Woodbine, IA, Jay Johnsen and his wife Leslie of Logan, IA, Jil and her husband Jeff Mortensen of Scribner, NE; 14 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; special cousin, Don Johnsen of Underwood, IA;sister-in-law, Juanita Johnsen of Woodbine, IA and many other relatives and friends.
