Charles Richard Hein was born June 21, 1922, to Charles and Eva (Baker) Hein in Dunlap, Iowa.  Charles grew up in Dunlap and graduated from Dunlap High School in 1939.  Charles enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was stationed in Hawaii.  After his honorable discharge in 1946, Charles moved back to Dunlap to help on the family farm, and he was also a substitute mail carrier.  Charles met Joan Hugron while she was teaching in Dow City.  The couple was married in Sioux City, Iowa on September 16, 1950.  Charles continued to farm and work for the postal service becoming a full time  rural mail carrier in the late 1970s.  Charles retired in 1984.  The couple moved to Colorado for a while and then settled in Omaha in 1994.
   
   
   Charles was a member of the American Legion in Dunlap and Woodbine; and was a past Commander of the Woodbine Legion.  He enjoyed bowling and was on a league in Dunlap.  Charles also enjoyed hunting, golfing, and horse racing.
   
   
   Charles died Sunday, January 14, 2007, at his home in Omaha at the age of 84 years, six months, and 24 days.
   
   
   Charles was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Vincent and one sister who died in infancy.  He is survived by his wife, Joan Hein of Omaha, Nebraska; son Jim Hein and his wife Dianne of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Tricia Hein and her husband Steve Sjoberg of Austin, Texas; Susan Hein of San Francisco, California; two grandchildren, Claire and Preston Hein of Houston, Texas; one brother, Fred Hein of Crescent, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
