Charlie Hansen

Henry Charles Hansen was born December 24, 1911, in Grove Township, Shelby County, Iowa to James and Catherine (VonTersch) Hansen. He was raised in Shelby County and attended school at the #5 Center School in Grove Township. Charlie worked as a farmhand in the area. In 1936 he started farming near Dunlap. On September 8, 1937, Charles married Vivian Johanna Berger in Deloit, Iowa. The couple moved east of Woodbine in 1939 and in 1943 they purchased a farm east of Woodbine. In 1963 the couple moved into town and Charlie worked for the Harrison County Road Department. Charlie retired from there in 1977. After retirement Charlie did outside painting and other jobs.

Charlie was a member of the Community of Christ, the Douglas Hill Country School board, and also an ASCS committeeman. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, fixing fence and walking. Up until the age of 90, Charlie walked six miles a day.

Charlie died on Friday, October 5, 2012, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 100 years, nine months, and 21 days.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vivian Hansen on September 11, 1996; son-in-law, Dan Lecnar; grandson, Jake Hansen; four brothers, Ivan, Ira, Frederick and Jesse Hansen; three sisters, Clara in infancy, Ethel Hansen, and Mary Killpack. He is survived by his two daughters, Carolyn and her husband Mike Waldemer of Pisgah, Iowa, Kathy Lecnar of Colfax, Iowa; three sons, Gene Hansen and his wife Judy of Walnut, Iowa, Lyle Hansen of Las Vegas, Nevada, John Hansen and his wife Elaine of Mesa, Arizona; 17 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
