Curtis J. Butler was born on May 22, 1948, to Hersel and Louise (Hiller) Butler. He grew up on a farm Northwest of Dow City and graduated from DCA. Curtis was then drafted into the United States Army 1st Signal Brigade 379, Signal Battalion. He was stationed in Thailand from March of 1968 until October 1969 as a teletype operator relaying confidential messages during the Vietnam War. On October 11, 1970, Curtis was united in marriage to the love of his life, Joyce Boettger. Together they built a life rooted in love, family, and hard work. The couple resided outside of Arion, Iowa. They were blessed with two children, Kris and Andy.
Curtis had a hardworking nature and quiet strength. He had a deep appreciation for farming and found great fulfillment in working the land. He was especially proud that Joyce worked alongside him on the farm sharing the rewards of their labor. Curtis was known for his easygoing sense of humor and a quick wit. He had a way of bringing a smile to those around him, often through simple stories or well-timed remarks. Curtis enjoyed spending time driving around looking at the land he once worked, going to the sale barn, attending farm sales, collecting crocks and butter churns (always looking for a bargain), and had a fondness for anything John Deere. In his quieter moments, Curtis could be found watching football, westerns, and Mecum Tractor Auctions. Curtis will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his love of farming, and the quiet strength and kindness he showed throughout his life.
Curtis died on April 8, 2026, at the age of 77 years, 10 months, and 17 days. It was believed that after the passing of his beloved wife, his heart was never quite the same. It brings comfort to know they are reunited once again.
Curtis was proceeded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce; parents; sister; Joann Creese; parents-in-law, Arthur and Edaline Boettger; brothers-in-law, Arlen Gierstorf, Ramon Williams, and Laverne Creese. He is survived by her children, Kris and her husband Jared Anastasi of Manilla, Iowa and Andy Butler and his wife Kalin of Arion, Iowa; grandchildren, Zoey and Damien Bissen of Minot, North Dakota, Kinze Anastasi, Heidi Anastasi, Kai Butler, Max Butler, Ali Butler and Ashton Butler; sister, Myra Williams of Denison, Iowa; siblings-in-law, Jerry and Patti Boettger of Denison, JoAnn and Fred Renze of Ida Grove, Iowa, and Janice Gierstorf of Denison; lifelong friend, Bill Brasel of Anthon; and many other relatives and friends.
