Daniel Joseph Herbst was born on July 31, 1942, in Panama, Iowa to Elmer and Agnes (Stessman) Herbst. He grew up on a farm and attended country school near Panama. Danny enlisted in the United States Army serving from 1962 to 1964. He was united in marriage to Carol Lee Monroe on September 12, 1964, at the St. Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha, Nebraska. He spent most of his life, 58 years, farming on his land between Panama and Woodbine.
Danny was a member of the St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama and of the Panama American Legion. Danny and Carol enjoyed polka dancing, card club and traveling south to winter in South Texas. He enjoyed this so much he continued wintering in Texas after Carol passed away. The family also enjoyed an annual trip to Michigan to visit family. Danny stayed in close contact with two friends from the army and they would meet up every year. He treasured time spent with family, especially his grandsons.
Danny died on April 11, 2024, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 81 years, eight months and 11 days.
Danny was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carol Lee Herbst on May 18, 2014; and brothers, Donald and William Herbst. He is survived by his fiancé, Jo Rath; children, Timothy Herbst and his wife Kristi of Harlan, Iowa, Elizabeth and her husband Paul Bencker, Sr. of Bennington, Nebraska, Laura and her husband Craig Doerhoff of Ankeny , Iowa and Linda and her husband Walter Ney of Sheridan, Indiana; ten grandsons; one great grandson; siblings, Jan Theulen of Panama, Iowa, Carol and her husband Ron Mickels of Omaha, Nebraska, Diane Dermond of Oakland, California, Jean Hesse of Fairfax, Iowa, Peg Shawver of Sacramento, California, Theodore Herbst and his wife Shirley of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and James Herbst and his wife Joan of Glenwood Springs, Colorado; and many other relatives and friends.
