Darlene Hood

d. December 29, 2013

Formerly of Woodbine, Iowa

Darlene Faye (Smith) Hood was born March 20, 1923, to William and Laura (Tupper) Smith in Woodbine, Iowa. Darlene grew up in Woodbine, graduating from Woodbine High School with the class of 1940. She went on to secretarial school then to Washington, D.C. during World War II. There she met Fred E. Hood at the USO, and they were married September 10, 1948. Darlene was a devoted and loving Navy wife bearing two children: Lagonda and Roger. Darlene and Fred were able to travel extensively during their 45 years of marriage.  She gave generously to others her entire life. She was active in her Christian family no matter where she went helping the sick, nurturing the newborn, comforting the dying; never did she falter.

Darlene died on December 29, 2013, in Key West, Florida at the age of 90 years, nine months, and nine days.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred Hood on January 22, 1994; sister, Myrna Shaffer; and two brothers, Dale and Kenneth Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Lagonda McDonald of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; son, Dr. Roger Hood and his wife Nadine of Big Pine Key, Florida; stepson, Fred Hood Jr. and his wife Billie of Madera, California; two sisters, Lois Snyder and Carla Davis both of Woodbine, Iowa; brother, Clifford Smith and his wife Eunice of Walnut, Iowa; brother-in-law, Lawrence Shaffer of Woodbine, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
