Dean Roman Block was born on December 4, 1949 to Herman and Marie (Kloewer) Block in Earling, Iowa. He was raised near Dunlap but attended Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, Iowa due to his hearing loss at a very young age. He was on the swim team and graduated in May of 1968. Dean went on to work at various jobs in Council Bluffs and Omaha, Nebraska.

Dean enjoyed golfing and dancing, in his younger years, and socializing. Deafness to him was not a handicap. He enjoyed spending time with family and playing games with his nieces and nephews. He was always there with a sweet smile, a hug and an “I love you”. Dean had an appetite as big as his heart, especially when it came to family meals at moms. He loved football, especially Iowa, Texas and the Kansas City Chiefs. He also loved to buy lotto tickets. Dean moved into Dunlap Specialty Care Center in December of 2011 due to multiple health issues.

Dean died on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at the Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha at the age of 70 years, ten months and 13 days.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Perry Smith; four siblings, Tom (Peggy) Block, Jane (Larry) Eggers, Marsha Grindle and Rodney Block; two nieces, Whitney Anne Cloud and Peggy Arlene Block.
