Raymond “Dean” Sandage was born on November 27, 1937, to Cleveland and Vergie (Wooden) Sandage in Bethany, Missouri. As a very young boy, he moved to Fiscus, Iowa and attended Harlan Public School. Dean took on the shared responsibility of the family farm near Fiscus until his parents retired and moved to Woodbine. Dean married Roberta Ann Vandivort in 1958. The couple was blessed with five children. In 1986, Dean found his significant other and life partner Pat Leinen.

Farming was Dean's lifelong passion. In his 85 years he saw and experienced different types of machinery and technology. As a boy Dean experienced farming with horses, and in the 60s he had one of the first self-propelled combines in the area. His CB handle "Field Boss" came from his 4-wheel drive White tractor...with a CAB!! But nothing would ever compare to his 1750 Oliver!

Dean coached legion baseball when his son Randy was young, served on the Dunlap Co-op board and ran the 'chains' and down markers for Dunlap High School football for 20 plus years. Dean enjoyed life to the fullest. He liked traveling to state & national parks and would always be the first to ride the rides at an amusement park with the kids. He played slow pitch softball for the Dunlap Blackshirts, and enjoyed hunting, especially with his son and grandson. He always had a friendly face, had time to chat with anyone, lent a helping hand, and would have a cold one or two. Dean loved going for drives and having a get together with family and friends.

Dean died on Friday, December 9, 2022, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine at the age of 85 years and 12 days.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Bev (Sandage) Hall; brothers, Lloyd (Helen), Boyd (Eileen) and Richard Sandage; sisters, Alberta (Gene) Marriott, Sandy (Gayle) McNelly and Leona (Horace) Graves. He is survived by his significant other and life partner, Pat Leinen; children, Randy (Joanne) Sandage, Deb (Steve) Lacey, Karen (Scott) Claussen and Terri (John) Beadleson; Pat's children, Doug (Joni) Leinen and Denise Leinen (Drew Foster); 10 grandchildren, Cally Sandage, Katie Sandage, Kari Sandage, Kyle Sandage, Joshua (Dawn) Claussen, Samantha Claussen, Jonathan (Heather) Bonnes, Harry Leinen, Lucy Leinen and Hazel Leinen; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Deanna Sandage; and many other relatives and friends.

Dean took pride in his family and community.  He taught his children, grandchildren and those around him by example... work hard, be friendly and be kind.
