Della Marie (Jones) Gilligan Viau was born to John and Sadie Elizabeth (Leytham) Jones on November 30, 1909, in Dunlap, Iowa. After she graduated from high school, she farmed and taught school. She was married to Jim Gilligan on November 29, 1930. Jim and his brother-in-law, Vernon, were killed in a house fire in September of 1947. Della then moved to Los Angeles, California with her four children. Della worked at AAA Insurance Company for many years. She married Louis Viau in October of 1956. He died in December of 1965.
Della enjoyed her family, horseracing, and fishing. Della had a tremendous amount of strength and courage throughout her life.
Della died on Sunday October 9, 2005, at Lakewood Convalescent Home in Hot Springs, Arkansas attaining the age of 95 years, 10 months, and nine days.
Della is preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and her son Tenny who died in 1985. She is survived by her daughter, Judy and her husband Larry Sterling of Hot Springs, Arkansas; two sons, Terry Gilligan and his wife Judi of Cayucos, California, Larry Gilligan of Monrovia, California; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and many other relatives and friends.
