Doris Maxine (Baughman) Swift was born March 24, 1928 to Harold and Helene (McIntosh) Baughman in Dunlap, Iowa. She was raised in the Dunlap, Dow City, and Denison area and graduated from Denison High School in 1947. On August 31, 1947 she married Elmer Swift at the R.L.D.S. Church in Denison. The couple lived northwest of Woodbine and moved to the current farm in 1957. Doris helped Elmer on the farm and raised the family. They milked Grade A cows for a number of years. After the children were raised, she worked in the kitchen at Rose Vista for ten years.
Doris was a member of Followers of Christ and was very active with the ladies at the church. The R.L.D.S. church ladies served meals at the Dunlap Livestock Auction before the café there was opened. She was also a member of the Kenningston View Neighborhood Club. She made donuts at church every Saturday morning. Doris loved gardening, flowers, tatting, crocheting, and playing the organ and piano. She loved music. Doris and her sister would sing at church. Doris would sing while milking cows and she taught her children hymns. Reading was another one of her favorite things to do.
Doris died on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, attaining the age of 90 years, 6 months, and 23 days.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Doretta Sue Swift; great grandson, Brendan Hurst; 2 sisters, Leone Lange and Donna Jean Allen; brother Blair Baughman; 2 brothers-in-law, Kenneth Lange and John Allen; and sister-in-law, Marlene Baughman. She is survived by her husband, Elmer Swift; 9 children, Kenard (Amy) Swift of Woodbine, Iowa, Gaylin (Connie) Swift of Woodbine, Iowa, Charlene (Kenneth) Meyer of St Joseph, Missouri, Roseann (Gary) Freeland of Panora, Iowa, Randal (Tracy) Swift of Magnolia, Iowa, Andrea Swift of Woodbine, Alvin (Carol) Swift of Mingo, Iowa, Delwin (Sher) Swift of McKinney, Texas, Denise (Kelly) Hallagan of Council Bluffs, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Deb Swift of Dunlap, Iowa; 16 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson; sister, Arloe (Marvin) Talcott of Independence, Missouri; and many other relatives and friends.
