Dorothy Nurse

Dorothy Maxine (Barnes) Nurse, daughter of James Frederick and Bess (Cuppy) Barnes, was born on March 5, 1925, in Storm Lake Iowa. She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1942. Dorothy married Robert Leroy Nurse on June 14, 1947, in Council Bluffs, at the First Christian Church, where she was a member.

She worked at Burlington Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad before attending Iowa State University. After her marriage, she and her family lived in Fulton, Missouri; Monterrey, Mexico; South Holland, Illinois; Bessemer, Alabama; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During her travels she remained faithful to the First Christian churches of the various cities.

After the death of her husband, Robert, she moved back to Council Bluffs where she he assisted her parents in the operation of Barnes Beauty Salon and College in Council Bluffs. Later, she worked with the Visiting Nurse Association in Omaha. She was a member of American Business Women and Altrusa International Club. She also volunteered her time at the VNA hospice and as a reading mentor. In 2013, she relocated to Tupelo, Mississippi to be near her family. She attended St. Luke United Methodist Church and was a member of Luke's Ladies Sunday School Class.

Dorothy died in her home on January 12, 2018, attaining the age of 92 years, 10 months and seven days.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Robert; daughter, Janet Triplett; brothers, James Barnes and Robert Barnes; sisters, Marjorie Frisbie and JoAnn Cosgriff; nephew, Kevin Cosgriff; niece, Joan Cosgriff; and brothers-in-law, Alfred Frisbie and Robert Cosgriff. She is survived by her children, Frederick Nurse of Tupelo, MS, Mary Anne Nurse of Gilbert, AZ; son-in-law, Tom Triplett of Blair, NE; grandchildren, Patrick Nurse and his wife Sarah of Tupelo, MS, Jessica (Triplett) Polk of Denver, CO, and Rebecca (Triplett) Rupiper of Omaha, NE; other family members and friends.
