     Douglas Craig Cue, 63, of Newton died on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm., Friday, May 30, at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, May 29, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Doug’s name (checks made to Jodie Cue) may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory or at the services.

     Doug, the son of Richard and Sharon (DeMay) Cue, was born on January 17, 1962, in Denison, Iowa. He grew up in Dunlap and graduated as the Class Salutatorian in 1980. In high school, not only was he an excellent student but also a record setting track runner, leading to a full ride scholarship in both academics and athletics to Morningside College. On the first day of his senior year, Doug would meet Jodie Butler. Doug was a poet by nature and Jodie will admit that the poems he wrote her won her heart. In 1984, Doug graduated from Morningside with degrees in Pre-Law and Sociology. Following he and Jodie’s marriage on August 9, 1986, in Webster City, Doug enrolled at St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City. While in school, Doug served in churches in Arion, Iowa and Walnut, Stork, and Hepler, Kansas. In 1989, Doug received his Master’s in Theology and began his ministry to many congregations and people in Iowa and beyond. The towns he served included Hancock, Garwin, Pleasant Hill, Sharon Center (15+ years), Missouri Valley/Udell, and Boone. Doug then served as District Superintendent in the Southeast Iowa area covering 142 churches, which he made of point of visiting all in the first four months in the position. In June of 2023, Doug began serving as the minister at the First United Methodist Church in Newton, where he was currently serving. Doug was loyal to every community and position he served in, most recently cooking and serving a free meal to anyone in need once a week in Newton. He also enjoyed sharing his admiration for John Wayne with all, even working him into his sermon series from time to time

    During his time in the ministry, Doug went on four mission trips, many allowing him the ability to use his handy-man skills to build houses and work on schools all while praying and spreading the word of God to those in need. After a rough start with music (a grade in music being the reason he was Salutatorian and not Valedictorian) he began playing the guitar and taking lessons while serving in Sharon Center. This new love would turn into being part of the “Sharon Praise” band along with his son, Tyler, for several years and using his guitar in many sermons and messages he delivered. Doug’s interests were many and included watching and participating in sports, cheering on the Hawkeyes, Chiefs, Packers, and the Fever, writing music, and listening to Classic Rock. He also loved his Cadillac, his ’67 Chevy truck, drawing, and woodworking. Doug was on a lifelong quest to find the perfect pen and the perfect cup of coffee. The G2 pen and the black coffee from the Java House in Iowa City were the current winners. At times through the years, Doug’s house could have been mistaken for a zoo or farm because of all the rescue animals and pets that were acquired, but he loved each and every one of them.

     Doug’s memory and ministry will continue with his wife, Jodie Cue of Newton; sons, Jacob Cue of Newton and Tyler Cue of Story City; his mom, Sharon Cue of Dunlap; siblings, Kevin (Jolene) Cue of Rockport, Missouri and Heidi (Steve) Warren of Ankeny; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Cue.
