Dwight Elwood Hamer was born on August 16, 1923, in Pisgah, Iowa to parents Wilson & Emma (Bock) Hamer. He graduated from Pisgah High School in 1941. Dwight then worked at the bomber plant in Buffalo, New York and then the Bomber Plant in Omaha, Nebraska. On January 23, 1943, he married Margaret Harmon at the RLDS Church in Omaha. In June of 1943 he entered the Army Air Corp. He served his basic training at Denver, Colorado then took pilot training at Washington State College in Pullman, Washington. After his schooling he was stationed in Amarillo, Texas as a cockpit instructor for the B-17 and B-29's. After his discharge he returned to Pisgah and operated a service station and tank wagon. Dwight then began trucking with his brother Vernon. Later on he became a dispatcher at the Livestock Exchange in Omaha. He retired as a dispatcher in the 1980's.
Dwight was an avid sports fan since the age of seven. He loved to follow all of the high school sports as well as other sports. Later he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golfing.
Dwight died on Thursday, November 18, 2004, at the Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley at the age of 81 years, three months, and two days.
Dwight was preceded in death by his parents, brother Vernon Hamer and s sister Joy Watson. He is survived by his wife Margaret of Pisgah, Iowa; four children Diane & her husband Curt Hanson of Fairfield, Iowa, Linda Terry of Ralston, Nebraska, Tim Hamer & his wife Mary of Chariton, Iowa and Terry Hamer & his wife Judy of Sioux City, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 4+ great grandchildren; sister Cecile & her husband Ben Matthews of Pisgah, Iowa and many other relatives and friends.
