Ed Heffernan

Edward Joseph Heffernan was born November 11, 1930, to Daniel and Margaret (Gaughan) Heffernan in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was raised in Dunlap and graduated in 1950 from St. Joseph High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for four years and then the Air Force for 20 years. On June 14, 1958, Ed married Rita Sullivan. The family traveled with Ed to his various stations including: Offutt Air Force Base, Gila Bend, Arizona, France, Rapid City, South Dakota, Sergeant Bluffs, Iowa, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and Wahiawa, Hawaii. Ed retired from the military in 1973 and the family returned to Dunlap. He continued working through his life at IBP, Farmland Foods as a security officer and also as a Dunlap police officer.

Ed was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap and the American Legion Post #224. He had a great love for people and would often greet people by recalling their birthdates instead of names. Dunlap is known for everyone having a nickname and some of Ed's lifelong friends claim he is responsible for a great many of those names!

Ed died on Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at the Dunlap Care Center at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 22 days.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rita Heffernan on February 11, 1995; granddaughter, Allison Heffernan; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Daniel and his wife Lee, Robert, and J.L. Heffernan; and sister, Marge Fink. He is survived by his four sons, Bob (Margie) Heffernan of Woodbine, IA, Dan (Sharon) Heffernan of Dunlap, IA, Marty (Jody) Heffernan of Eagle Grove, IA, Ed (Marla) Heffernan of Minneapolis, MN; 10 grandchildren, Karlie, Jamie, Sean, Joel, Brandon, Kyle, Hanna, Tonya, Erin and Joseph; 3+ great grandchildren: two brothers, Harold (Lilly) Heffernan of Carrollton, TX, Pat (Eileen) Heffernan of Dunlap, IA; sister, Mary Wachter of Scottsdale, AZ; and many other relatives and friends.
