Elizabeth Cook

Elizabeth Ruth (Siglin) Cook was born on March 4, 1915, to Will J. and Bessie (Cue) Siglin on the family farm in Crawford County, near Dunlap, Iowa. She was raised near Dunlap. Elizabeth "Betty" married Merlyn Cook on August 4, 1942, in Kimball, Nebraska. Merlyn was in the service and was stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Elizabeth enjoyed working for the Union Pacific Railroad. Betty and Merlyn moved to several states until he was discharged in 1946. The couple returned to Iowa and settled in Council Bluffs. Betty studied nursing and became a LPN. She worked at Mercy Hospital, Jackson's Rest Home, with Dr. Brown and in later years with Dr. Krummel. She enjoyed her time working with Dr. Krummel and they became very dear friends. Although Elizabeth and Merlyn had no children of their own they were a very loving and caring aunt and uncle to all of their nieces and nephews. Elizabeth enjoyed writing letters to her many family and friends as well as knitting mittens for her family and the needy. In one year she knitted 300 mittens for the Open Door Mission. She also crocheted many afghans. Elizabeth enjoyed playing games with her family, and she liked playing Bingo with her friends.

Elizabeth was an active member of the 1st Christian Church in Council Bluffs. She and Merlyn worked with the youth groups there. After moving to Glenwood, Iowa in 1977, she became an active member of the 1st Christian Church there. Elizabeth was known to make an angel food cake for her church friends for their birthday. Elizabeth moved to Woodbine, Iowa in 2005. She attended the United Methodist Church with her nieces and helped the United Methodist Women.

Elizabeth died on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 101 years, four months, and one day.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Loyal "Johnny" and Wayne Siglin; sister, Valdean Blankenship; niece, Leda Hatterman; and nephews, Aaron Siglin and Larry Burkhardt. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Ila Handke of Glenwood, IA, Lorna Turley of Mound City, KS, Lowell (Joanne) Siglin of Stark City, MO, Lola (Jim) Pelton of Woodbine, IA, Linda Sinnott of Avon, IN, Bill Blankenship of Council Bluffs, IA, Bill (Maryann) Siglin of Denison, IA, Anita (Cliff) Allmon of Moorhead, IA and Doyle (Diane) Siglin of Ankeny, IA; and many other relatives and friends.

Elizabeth often said, "No children of my own could have been more dear to me, or more caring."
