Estal Hinkel

Logan, Iowa

Estal Eugene Hinkel was born on July 26, 1927, to Martin and Velma (Carson) Hinkel in Orson, Iowa. He was drafted into the Army on December 31, 1945, and was stationed at Camp Roberts in California and the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. He received the WWII Victory Medal before being honorably discharged June 18, 1947. Estal married Neva Jean Hildreth February 5, 1950, in Pisgah, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Pisgah area for 10 years. In 1960 they moved to Logan, Iowa where Estal continued to farm and raise livestock until his health required him to retire in the late 1980's.

Estal enjoyed spending time with his family, grand-children and great grandchildren. He enjoyed playing the guitar, camping, playing cards, dancing and making yard ornaments and replicas of horse drawn wagons. He was well known for his Tin Man.

Estal passed away Sunday, March 25, 2018, at CHI Health in Missouri Valley, Iowa at the age of 90 years, seven months and 29 days.

Estal was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Neva Hinkel; granddaughter, Jody Gochenour Mayberry; two sisters, Margaret Armstrong and Lucille Hinkel; three brothers, Roy, Ike and Lynn Hinkel; two brothers-in-law, John Albert Hinkel, Dale Sorensen; and two sisters-in-law, Naomi Hinkel and Josie Hinkel. Survivors include: three daughters, Lonnie (Kent) Gochenour of Council Bluffs, IA, Susan (Dennis) Hornbeck of Reno, NV and Vicki Hinkel of Glendale, CO; one son, Mike (Kim) Hinkel of Logan, IA; seven grandchildren, Traci Hornbeck of Redwood City, CA, Cory (Sarah) Hornbeck of Dublin, CA, Jaime (Jeff) Malsberger of Beaumont, CA, Angela (Newton) Moreira of Englewood, CO, Katie (Jeff) Kaplan of Denver, CO, Tyler (Amanda) Hinkel and Kurtis (Tammy) Hinkel all of Logan, IA; ten great grand-children; four sisters, Betty (Mearl) Johnson of Dunlap, IA, Barbara Sorensen of North Bend, NE, Edna Hopkins of Woodbine, IA, and Lorna Tillisch of Wakefield, KS; two brothers, Robert (Twyla) Hinkel of Pisgah, IA and Dwight (Karen) Hinkel of Cedar Bluffs, NE; sister-in-law, Lila Hinkel of Onawa, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
