Eugene Craig Hess was born on November 9, 1945, to Everett and Anna (Anderson) Hess in Harlan, Iowa. Gene grew up in Harlan and graduated from Harlan High School in 1964. Gene married Karen Goeser on April 20, 1968. The couple lived in Harlan and moved to Dunlap in 1977. Gene worked at Iowa Western Pork in Harlan, and then for 35 years at Farmland Foods in Denison, retiring in 2011.

Gene was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap. He enjoyed family vacations, camping, hunting and fishing.

Gene died on Friday, April 26, 2013, at his home in Dunlap after a short illness at the age of 67 years, five months, and 17 days.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Floyd and Barb Hess; sister and brother-in-law, Judy and LaVern Kock; grandson, Derek Hess; and three nephews. He is survived by his wife, Karen Hess of Dunlap, Iowa; five children, Troy Hess and his wife Kristen of Lincoln, Nebraska, Renee and her husband Todd Bye of Seward, Nebraska; Craig Hess of Milford, Iowa, Cory Hess of Dow City, Iowa, Nathan Hess and his fiancée Shona Paris of Blair, Nebraska; five grandsons; three granddaughters; brother, Gail Hess and his wife Jerilyn of DeWitt, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
