Woodbine--- Fern L. Kenkel, 76 of Woodbine died Sunday, July 7, 2002 at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine.
Fern was born December 14, 1925 in Woodbine, Iowa to parents George and Ida (Bintz) Churchill. She graduated from Woodbine High School in 1943. She completed her Normal Training in Woodbine and Cedar Falls and was a country schoolteacher for a few years. On October 1, 1946, Fern married Gerald Kenkel at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Woodbine. The couple farmed near Woodbine. Gerald died on April 12, 2001.
Fern's interests included quilting, gardening, reading, playing scrabble, and playing cards. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, American Legion Auxiliary, Westside Kensington Club, Chat and Sew and quilting groups. She volunteered at Rose Vista and had been a member of the Woodbine School Board.
Fern was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Gerald and two sons, Terrence and John Kenkel, sister Ida May Collins and brothers, Lester, Donald and Raymond Churchill.
Fern is survived by her five daughters, Margaret and her husband Fred Straight of Logan, Kristin and her husband Paul Hansen of Onslow, IA, Roberta and her husband Darrell Morse of Minden, Jean and her husband Dave Stamp of Woodbine and Mary and her husband Greg Hardy of Fredricksburg, VA; four sons, Stephen Kenkel and his wife Beth of Grinnell, IA, Kevin Kenkel and his wife Julie of Litchfield Park, AZ, Colin Kenkel and his wife Theresa of Clive, IA and Daniel Kenkel and his wife Julieanne of Firth, NE; 26 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; three sisters, Gertrude and her husband Dick Ackerman of Salem, OR, Darlene Bouchereau of France and Vera and husband Jim Hummel of Wayne, NE; two brothers, Paul Churchill & his wife Irene of Woodbine, George Churchill of Omaha, NE; two sisters-in-law, Lovina Bryant of Underwood, IA; and Juanita Churchill of Dow City, IA.
