Francis Vincent Guinan was born on August 9, 1933, in Omaha, Nebraska. Frank grew up with the strong values of hard work, faith, and family that would define his life. He was also a veteran of the United States Army. Frank was a lifelong entrepreneur and a man who believed in building something meaningful. He owned and operated Missouri Valley Grain for 35 years, dedicating himself to the agricultural community and earning the respect of colleagues and friends alike. During that time, he also started Guinan Brothers Trucking in order to earn extra money to help with his boys’ post education and careers. Later in life, he and his wife Barb, along with sons Pat and Tim founded and operated the well known and loved by all Gurney’s Restaurant and Lounge, where they created not just a business but a gathering place for family and community. In time, he proudly passed the restaurant on to his sons, Tim and Pat, who continued his legacy of family stewardship and hard work. In 1995, Frank moved to Pharr, Texas to escape the harsh Iowa winters, where he enjoyed many happy years of golfing daily until 2020 before returning to Missouri Valley full time. No matter where he lived, Frank was never idle. He was always working on a project - fixing, building, improving - rarely sitting still for long, oftentimes causing many head shakes, eye rolls, and inside jokes from his family. “Hey guys, guess what Frank is up to now?” was a common theme in family chats.
An avid golfer, Frank found great joy on the course. He loved the game and celebrated the rare achievement of multiple holes-in-one over the years, a point of pride he carried. He golfed all over the United States and even in Ireland. In his 70’s and 80’s, he amazed all who knew him by golfing his age year after year. Above all else, Frank was the proud father of - as he would tell people- “two and a half dozen sons” (8): Joe (Trish), Ed (Andrea), Dan (Kathie), Tom (Kelly), Mike (Chris), Pat, Tim (Carol), and Mark (Sara). He was blessed with 19 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and happiness. His love for his family was generous and enduring.
Frank, age 92, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Grace (Cronin) Guinan; brothers, Thomas, Daniel, Gerald and Jack Guinan; and sister, Kathleen Perry. He is survived by Barb Guinan; his eight sons and their families; and the many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry forward his stories, values, and love.
Frank will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his quick wit and orneriness, his lifelong love of golf, pride in his Irish heritage and the love he had for his friends and family.
