Gene Lowell Benson was born on November 13, 1936, to Philip & Lorraine (Kincheloe) Benson in Magnolia, Iowa. He grew up in Magnolia and graduated from Magnolia High School in 1954. He started working with the telephone company at the age of 17. He joined the Army and served from 1955-1957. Gene then came back home and worked for the telephone company for 38 years until his retirement in 1990, at the age of 55. On August 16, 1959, Gene married Janice Powell in the Logan Christian Church. Gene served his community in many capacities including the city council, church board, Logan Police Department, and Farm Service Coop. He was a member of the Logan Fire and Rescue Department where he served as the rescue captain. He also cherished his time as a Special Deputy Sheriff with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department.
Gene and Janice enjoyed spending 30 years wintering in Arizona. He also enjoyed his guns and knives, camping, the Spencer Fair, westerns, court TV, game shows, and recalling memories of his Magnolia High School class. He was especially fond of Janice’s homemade cinnamon rolls, Erika’s homemade pumpkin pie, Kathy’s homemade ice cream, Greg’s T-bones on the grill, and Beth’s shakes. He enjoyed telling stories of drag racing his ’57 Chevy and cruzing the streets with Janice in his convertible.
