Glenn William Thompson was born on May 25, 1928, in Crawford County, Iowa to Noah William and Mary (Olson) Thompson. He attended school until ninth grade before he was needed full time on the farm. Glenn married the love his life, Mae LaVonne Boustead, on September 3, 1950, at Woodbine Methodist Church. From 1951 to 1953, Glenn served in the United States Army, based in Germany during the Korean War. He returned to Woodbine afterward, and the couple was blessed with two children, Glenna and Bob.
A lifetime farmer and volunteer, Glenn was a respected community leader – from his longtime membership at the Woodbine Methodist Church to conservation. In 1960, Murray Hubbard and he founded the Woodbine Saddle Club, first starting with horse shows and later, the popular community rodeo, which is still an annual event to this day. Glenn also founded the Western Iowa Feeder Cattle Producers Organization. As a member of the Harrison County Conservation Board, Glenn was instrumental in creating the 220-acre Willow Lake Recreation Area, one of the largest parks in the region. He was also an active member of Harrison County Cattlemen’s Association, Harrison County Pork Producers and Weiss American Legion Post #143.
In his pastime, he enjoyed traveling on hunting trips with family and friends. An avid horseman, Glenn trained and raised horses, donkeys and mules. He became known for his affinity for owning exotic animals – dingos, coyotes, guinea hens, peacocks and more.
Glenn died on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at his home at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 15 days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his four brothers, Tom, Bill, Dale and Jim. He is survived by his wife of 72 years; daughter, Glenna and her husband Allen Plath of Pisgah; son, Bob Thompson and his wife Lorie of Woodbine; six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and many other relatives.
