Gregory Anthony Langenfeld was born November 28, 1918 in Shelby County, Iowa to parents George and Annie (Schmitz) Langenfeld. Greg graduated from Westphalia Catholic High School in 1936. He worked at a lumber camp in Minnesota and then for George Kaufman south of Westphalia. When his brothers were called to the service during WW II Greg farmed the home place and drove a truck. On September 9, 1943, Greg married Theresa Gilles in Staceyville, Iowa. The couple lived in Westphalia, northwest of Panama and in the Defiance area. In 1957, they bought their farm near Dunlap. In 1972, the couple moved into Dunlap. Theresa died on July 22, 2005.
Greg was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church and had been a member of the Knights of Columbus. Greg's favorite pastime was fishing. Greg was known for his secret recipe for batter for fish and mountain oysters.
Greg died on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at his home in Dunlap at the age of 98 years, four months and 25 days.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, wife Theresa, infant son and four sisters, Lollie Gross, Irene Domino, Theresa Wageman and Cleta Pitts; three brothers, Leo Langenfeld, Ray Langenfeld and Linus Langenfeld. Greg is survived by three daughters, Sue and her husband Jeff Craig of Atoka, Tennessee, Elaine and husband Rod Hansen of Fremont, Nebraska and Cheryl and her husband Marc Casebolt of Simi Valley, California; three sons, Dave Langenfeld and his wife Chris of Fremont, Nebraska, Jerry Langenfeld and his wife Mary Ann of Sunland, California and Keith Langenfeld and his wife Bonnie of Wayne, Nebraska; 19 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 9 + great great grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Siemer of Dow City, Iowa and Odelia Coenen of Woodward, Iowa and many other relatives and friends.
