Helen Fischer

Woodbine

Helen Leota (Miller) Fischer was born September 16, 1929, to John L. and Matie (Petersen) Miller in Orient, Iowa.  Later the family moved to their farm near Woodbine where Helen developed a love of animals, particularly cats; and the outdoors. She attended Woodbine High School graduating with honors in 1947.   Helen then attended Morningside College for two years receiving a teaching certificate and becoming engaged to her future husband Cloyce.  Helen then taught country school for two years while Cloyce served his country in Korea.  They were married on November 9, 1952 in the Woodbine Methodist Church and began farming south of Woodbine.  Later, Helen returned to teaching 3rd grade in Dunlap and later Woodbine while completing her degree in 1975.

Helen was a lifelong member of the Woodbine First United Methodist Church and related service groups. Cloyce and Helen retired from farming in 1991 and moved to town.  After retiring from teaching in 1992, she and Cloyce enjoyed traveling with their camping trailer and attending their grandkids many ballgames, school programs, and recitals. Helen took great pride in her faith, her family, and her students.  Abigail was her favorite cat.

Helen died on April 6, 2020 attaining the age of 90 years, 6 months, and 21 days.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, of 51 years, Cloyce; parents, John and Matie; infant daughter, Sharon; sisters, Margaret (Miller) Cox, Elizabeth (Miller) Bai, and Carol Ruth (Miller) McClenathan.   She is survived by her children, Steve Fischer and his wife Christy of Omaha, Nebraska, Mary and her husband Joe Hodapp of Alleman, Iowa and Jeanette Fischer of Woodbine; siblings, Charles Miller of Woodbine, and Doris Ellen and husband Ray Points of Mesquite, Nevada; grandchildren, Jennifer, Andrew, and Kaitlyn; and many other relatives and friends.  The family requests any donations be made to the Woodbine Food Pantry or United Methodist Church.
