Helen Irene Hartwig was born on March 13, 1927, to William and Cora (Stephenson) Turner in Dow City, Iowa. She was raised in Dow City and graduated from Dow City High School. At age 17 Helen started teaching school, and she taught sixth grade for 27 years in Dow City. Helen married Paul Hartwig on June 5, 1949. Paul died on November 21, 2010.

Helen especially loved spending time with her family. She also enjoyed canning, gardening, and reading. Helen loved to have company to visit with, especially her former students. Paul and Helen both enjoyed taking their elderly friends to their various doctor's appointments.

Helen died Monday, March 12, 2018, at her son's home in Dunlap at the age of 90 years, 11 months and 29 days.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul Hartwig; and two brothers, Gerald and James Turner. She is survived by her daughter, Jane and her husband Dan Burroughs of Ute, Iowa; son, Robert and his wife Ellie Hartwig of Dunlap, Iowa; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
