Norma Jean (McHenry) Barry was born April 1, 1935, to Riley and Alice (Axtel) McHenry in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Jean attended country school and then graduated from Woodbine High School in 1953. She worked at the Pix Theater when she was in 7th and 8th grade and at the Bolt Café for Bill Bolt while she was in high school. After graduation she worked at Mutual of Omaha. In 1954, Jean married Gale Barry and the couple continued to live in Woodbine. Jean continued to work in restaurants except for two years when she worked at Rose Vista Nursing Home. Jean moved to the Woodland Apartments in 1992.
On April 8, 1951, Jean was baptized at the First Christian Church in Woodbine by the Rev. Morris Bailey. She loved to have fun and play games. Jean was always a jokester and loved dressing up for Halloween. She also loved her cat, Triscut. Jean enjoyed being on Facebook as well as playing the on-line games. Jean always enjoyed working at restaurants because she could then keep in contact with people and keep up on the local happenings.
Jean died on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home at the age of 78 years, six months and 29 days.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Richard "Butch" McHenry; and sister, Mary Pat Grimsley. She is survived by her four children, Dan (Sandy) Barry, David (Jackie) Barry, and Rylene (Steve) Nelson all of Woodbine, Iowa, Rhonda (Troy) Deaton of West Des Moines, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; Butch's and Pat's children that Jean treated like her own grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
