Jessie Smith

Jessie Fern (Golden) Smith was born January 30, 1925, to William Ernest and Gladys Lucille (Overman) Golden in Woodbine, Iowa. She was raised in Woodbine attending Woodbine Public Schools, and she graduated in 1943. Jessie married Arthur Smith on December 9, 1943, at the RLDS Church in Woodbine. The couple lived in the Woodbine area. Jessie helped raise her siblings and other family members even after her marriage. Art died on June 16, 1991.

Jessie enjoyed playing cards, working crossword puzzles, and crocheting. Every morning she would do the World Herald's crossword puzzle. She also enjoyed her weekly get-togethers with her sisters to play Scrabble. On occasion other friends and family would join the game as well. Additionally, Jessie enjoyed camping with Art, was an avid chicken collector and she also enjoyed bowling as she bowled on a league for many years.

Jessie died Monday, January 13, 2014, at her home in Woodbine at the age of 88 years, 11 months, and 14 days.

Jessie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur Smith; son, Dean Smith; grandson, Tim Ehlert; son-in-law, Richard Dickman; sister, Louise Jensen; four brothers, Kenny, Dwight, Vernon, and Ernie Golden. She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Dickman and Elaine (Richard) Ehlert all of Woodbine, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Smith of Woodbine, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; three sisters, Lucille Mathison, Janice (Larry) Douglas all of Woodbine, Iowa, Janet (George) Letson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
