James John Hoffmann was born June 18, 1944, to Alphonse and Lucille (Kuhl) Hoffmann in Harlan, Iowa. He was raised in Panama and attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Panama. Jim farmed most of his life. Jim married Jeanne Fitzpatrick on September 4, 1965, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap. The couple lived in Earling until 1981 when they moved to their current farm near Dunlap. Jim ran the truck stop in Missouri Valley, Iowa with Bill Erlbacher from 1977 - 1981. The couple then continued farming south of Dunlap.

Jim was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Jim enjoyed attending tractor pulls. He also loved to cook and grill. He particularly enjoyed camping with his grandchildren, family events and was always a gracious host.

Jim died on Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa at the age of 72 years, 10 months, and 14 days.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Jason Hoffmann. He is survived by his wife Jeanne Hoffmann of Dunlap, Iowa; his four children, John (Karen) Hoffmann, Joe (Stannis) Hoffmann all of Dunlap, Iowa, Judi (Neil) Schmitz of Westphalia, Iowa, Jeff (Melanie) Hoffmann of Elkhorn, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; four brothers, Ronald (Jan) Hoffmann of Papillion, Nebraska, Robert (Debbie) Hoffmann of Center Point, Texas, Mike (Lori) Hoffmann, Brian Hoffmann all of West Des Moines, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
