John Donald Davie was born on August 27, 1954, to Donald "Dover" and Jane (Smith) Davie in Denison, Iowa. He was the oldest of five children. John graduated in 1972 from Dunlap High School and joined the U.S. Army shortly after graduation. John served 23 years in the military before retiring in 1995. He rose to the rank of Sergeant Major, the highest rank possible for enlisted members. He served as the Senior Staff Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) for Individual Training in the Operations and training Directorate, National Guard Bureau. While in the military John lived in El Paso, Texas, Germany, Baltimore, Maryland, and many other locations around the world. After retiring he returned to the Dunlap area. In 2002, John married Marilyn (Mumm) Malone.

John was baptized in the Methodist church and he later joined the Catholic Church. He sang in the choir and helped teach the religious education program. John completed his Bachelor's of Science in Behavioral Science from Bellevue University and worked in the social services at many different agencies. He enjoyed bicycling, running, and exercising. He completed several years of RAGBRAI and many sprint triathlons and road races. He was instrumental in starting the Dunlap Duathalon and was a supporter of the Wellness Center in Dunlap.

John died November 1, 2012, at his home in Dunlap surrounded by his family at the age of 58 years, two months, and four days.

John was preceded in death by his brother, Mitch Davie. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Davie of Dunlap, Iowa; stepson, Dillon Malone and friend Jodi Larsen of Atlantic, Iowa; two stepdaughters, Cheri Malone and friend Luke Long of Sioux City, Iowa, and Lynzie Malone and fiancé Chris Reisz of Niobrara, Nebraska; parents, Donald and Jane Davie; two sisters, Maria Davie and Laurie and her husband Larry Klein; brother, Matt Davie and his wife Dawn all of Dunlap, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
