John Francis Schwab was born July 24, 1940, in rural Harrison County, Iowa to Carl Leonard and Mary Sophia (Flynn) Schwab. John attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Dunlap through the 8th grade and graduated from Dunlap Community School in 1958. After graduation, John attended Commercial Extension Business School in Omaha, Nebraska and then returned to farming in Dunlap until July of 1963 when he was drafted in the U. S. Army. He was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. After 18 months of active duty he was honorably discharged and returned to farming in Dunlap until 1968. John was also employed at Excello Corporation out of Chicago and travelled the U.S. as an installation engineer. He also was employed at Melville Confections for several years. John returned to Dunlap in 1979 where he was employed at Cogdill Grain Elevator. He also had his own business of Schwab's Automotive and Transmission Repair from 1982-1996. Additionally, John was currently in farm management for the Schwab family.
John was a lifelong member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Dunlap American Legion. He has provided time and gifts to many charitable causes especially the Dunlap Care Center where he was a frequent visitor and contributor. He has always been known for his honesty and charity to others.
John died on Friday, June 27, 2014, at the Dunlap Nursing & Rehab Center at the age of 73 years, 11 months, and three days.
John was preceded in death by his parents; aunt, Elizabeth Schwab; two uncles, Paul and Henry Schwab; and nephew, Robert Plowman. He is survived by his two sisters, Mary Joan Plowman of Council Bluffs, IA and Helen (Donald) McCluskey of Indianapolis, IN; two nephews, Carl Michael Plowman of Council Bluffs, IA and Sean E. McCluskey of Indianapolis, IN; niece, Kayla Plowman of Council Bluffs, IA; and many other relatives and friends.
