Julia Sanford

Julia Ann (Zwak) Sanford was born March 7, 1933, to John and Anna (Boer) Zwak in Sioux City, Iowa. Julia was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1951. On November 16, 1951, Julia married Richard Sanford at the Presbyterian Church in Sioux City. The couple moved to Bangor, Maine and then Plainville, Louisiana while Richard was in the service. After his honorable discharge the couple returned to Sioux City. Julia worked as a legal secretary before the couple took over the management of her father's business, Sioux Carving. They moved the business to Dunlap and renamed it Dunlap Furniture Frames in 1966. They closed the business in 1972. In 1976 they moved to Council Bluffs.

Julia was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. When her girls were little she served as a Girl Scout and Brownie leader. Julia enjoyed square dancing, camping and baking. Julia loved the name her family gave her, Grandma Juls.

Julia died on Thursday, August 18, 2016, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 83 years, five months, and 11 days.

Julia was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Richard Sanford of Woodbine, Iowa; four daughters, Chris (Gary) McDonald of Lake View, Iowa, and their children, Brent and Brad McDonald and Carrie Wilson, Debra Shaffer of Bellwood, Nebraska, and her children, Lucas and Jessica Shaffer, Treva (Fanny) Block of Dunlap, Iowa, and their children, Jeremy Block and Katie Dumbaugh, Lisa (Michael) Bussard of Brentwood, Tennessee and their children Morgan and AJ Bussard; 11 great grandchildren; sister, Helen Auchstetter of Granville, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
