Julie Beth (Smith) Coolman was born October 28, 1961, to Lonnie and Patricia (Newman) Smith in Canton, Missouri. Julie's mother died when she was very young. Lonnie then married Karen Havermale and the family relocated to Phoenix, Arizona. Julie attended school and was involved with the dance team. Following her high school graduation she worked at UTI Technical School in Phoenix. Julie met Don while she worked at the school and he attended the school. The couple married on June 1, 1991, in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Julie then worked as a nurse's aide in Syracuse, Nebraska. The couple moved to Woodbine in the spring of 1995. In 2001 they moved to their current home near Logan. The couple were foster parents from 2002 – 2013. Julie worked at Energique in Woodbine since December of 2013 as a team leader. She was currently training for a supervisory position.

Julie loved her daughters and her foster children. She was a wonderful mother. She thoroughly enjoyed riding motorcycles with Don and their friends. The motorcycling really connected the family. She loved her animals and would take in any stray animal that came their way.

Julie died on Friday, August 14, 2015, as a result of a motorcycle accident near Spirit Lake, Iowa at the age of 53 years, nine months and 17 days.

Julie was preceded in death by her mother and half sister, Renea Smith-Hill. She is survived by her husband, Don Coolman of Logan, Iowa; twin daughters, Rachel and Rebecca Coolman of Logan, Iowa; father, Lonnie (Karen) Smith of Glendale, Arizona; brothers, Duane (Jill) Smith of Aurora, Colorado, Jeff (Elaine) Smith of Woodbine, Iowa; sisters, Melanie (Samuel) Rosenblatt of Phoenix, Arizona, Kelli (Mike) Moomey of Phoenix, Arizona; half sister, Sheree Smith of Glendale, Arizona; step-brother, Scott (Rosella) Smith of Washington; step-sister, Sue (Gary) Botsch of Smyrna, Delaware; parents-in-law, Mic and Ladena Coolman of Logan, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
