Kenneth Charles Smiley was born on December 23, 1931, in Arlington, Kansas to parents James Brian & Bessie Marie (O'Bleness) Smiley. He grew up in the Arlington area and graduated from Arlington High School. He then worked at a Hydraulic plant in Hutchison, Kansas. In June of 1953 he joined the U.S. Army and served until May of 1955 at which time he was discharged from active duty into the reserves.
Ken moved to Omaha in 1957 to train to be a Phillips 66 gas station manager. His first station he managed was on 68th & Ames in Omaha. On April 11, 1959, he married Barbara Dai at the St. Peter's Catholic Church in Omaha. The couple lived in Omaha and Papillion. Ken then worked for Vickers until his retirement in 1991. The couple moved to Logan, Iowa in June of 1992.

Ken was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church. He loved camping, campfires, dogs, and simply being outdoors.

Ken died March 17, 2004 at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 72 years, two months, and 23 days.

Ken is preceded in death by his parents; a brother Herbert Smiley and a sister Helen Beard. He is survived by his wife Barbara of Logan, Iowa; sons Larry Smiley and his wife Kris of Bellevue, Nebraska, Rodney Smiley of Logan, Iowa; daughters Cindy and her husband Pat Miller of Roosevelt, Minnesota, Samantha and her husband Joey Steinkuehler of Logan, Iowa; four grandchildren Valerie, Sara, Anthony, and Kara; brother Richard Smiley and his wife Judy of Wichita, Kansas; and many other relatives and friends.
