Larry Maguire

d. July 23, 2016

Logan, Iowa

Larry Marion Maguire was born December 29, 1942, to Marion "Mick" and Lorraine (Chappell) Maguire near Hardscratch, southeast of Logan, Iowa. He attended grade school at Reader's Mills Country School and high school in Logan. Larry was a baptized member at the Logan Christian Church. Larry married Carol Oviatt on August 1, 1960, at the Logan Christian Church with Ron Koenig and Jean Powell as attendants. Larry worked as a truck driver for Wilson Holben at the Logan Mill during the day and farmed with his dad evenings and weekends. The couple lived in town for the first years, and Kathy Jo and Ronda Jill were born. In March 1963 they  moved to the farm just north of Logan with two little girls, six sows ready to have pigs, a small line of used machinery and high hopes for the future. Larry continued to work in town for another year. That summer Diana Jan was born.

When Larry wasn't farming, he drove a truck hauling detasseling crews, drove truck for Dick Sall on a corn-shelling crew, drove a freight delivery truck part-time for Merv Hansen and worked part-time in a local gas station. He loved to drive trucks and for a time, drove rock trucks and semis for friends. In the mid-1970's he bought his own semi and trailers for hauling grain, feed and livestock.

In 1964, Larry became a member of the Logan Volunteer Fire Department serving for 43 years. He served on the board several years, as assistant Fire chief, and one term as Fire Chief. He also was a dedicated Rescue Squad member. Larry served for over 30 years as a Jefferson Township Trustee, an Upper Boyer River Drainage and Kirk Drainage District Trustee, and on the Harrison County Board of Adjustment.

On May 6, 1975, Larry's youngest daughter, Diana, drowned near the farm, in the aftermath of flooding from a tornado. In December of 1977, Michael Marion joined the family. Michael wasn't quite three years old when they bought a cabin near West Battle Lake.

In 1983 a new era began when Larry and Carol became Grandparents. All five of their grandchildren attended school in Logan and spent a lot of time at Grandpa's. Grandpa Larry especially loved taking them all to the field with him, letting them drive, teaching them to play cards, and to fish and having them spend time with him at the lake. When Michael was old enough to drive trucks, they began their own trucking company and at one time had five semis in their fleet. Grandpa Larry taught grandson, Joe to drive truck also.

In 2005 Larry retired from farming and spent most of the summertime at the lake. He still helped Michael some with spring planting and all that he could in the fall with combining. The kids, grandchildren, great grandchildren, many of the nieces & nephews and friends spent time with Larry and Carol at the lake. This summer Larry and Carol spent 2 ½ months at the lake. Larry had a special time at the lake with all the kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids except Brian, Anna, and Dakota. Then he had a special Saturday with those three at home.  His times with the kids at the lake and at home was what he loved most.

Larry loved his family, his grandkids, and great-grandkids, and special times with them. Holidays were celebrated with them around the dining table with much joy and laughter. He especially loved Christmas Day with all the kids there. For the last 20 years he made his special vegetable soup for dinner on New Year's Day and shared it with anyone who could get there.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Amon and Gwendolyn Oviatt; daughter, Diana Maguire; nephews Courtie Oviatt and Stuart Chase; and three sisters-in-law, Mary Margaret Maguire, Sharon Muxfeldt and Joan Oviatt. Those left to mourn are his wife, Carol; three children, Kathy Jo and Bill Lundergard, Ronda and Terry Oloff and Michael and Kay Maguire; grandchildren, Joseph and Rachel Maguire, Brian and Anna Lundergard, Brittany Lundergard, Bryce Maguire and MaKenna Maguire; great grandchildren, Maggie, Dylan, RaeLynn, Zoey and Ainzley Maguire and Dakota Lundergard; brother Jerry and Vicki Maguire; sister, Sharon and David Chase; and many other relatives and friends.
