Leo Nelson was born on March 2, 1919 near Dunlap, Iowa to parents Asher W. & Selma Marie (Rustin) Nelson. He grew up in the Nelson Hollow area west of Dunlap. For a short time the family moved to Lakeview, Iowa. Leo attended country school #9. He worked on the farm and began his career as a sheep shearer. In 1942, he joined the US Army and was discharged in 1945. He continued his sheep shearing and doing odd jobs especially electrical or motor related jobs. His sheep shearing took him to South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Minnesota. In December of 1964, Leo married Ruth Krueger. She died in July of 1965 when the twins were 2 � months old. Leo married LaVerne Krueger on October 10, 1967.
Leo loved to work with his hands, especially in his garden, on motors, picking walnuts, cleaning popcorn and blacksmithing.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Ruth, five brothers Gifford, Kenneth, Willis, Marvin and Dewey and a grandson Adam Kroll. He is survived by his wife LaVerne Nelson of Dunlap; his twins Marty Nelson and his wife Veronica and Ella and her husband Dean Malone all of Dunlap; two stepsons Neal Lembke of Dow City and Gordon Lembke and his wife Colleen of Sheffield, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; two sisters Wilma Clements and Della and her husband Ray Fouts of Dunlap; sister-in-law Shirley Nelson of Woodbine and many other relatives and friends.
