Leonard Andrew Bolton was born on February 5, 1929, to Andrew and Vera (Green) Bolton on the family farm west of Dunlap in Monona County. Leonard attended country school and then Dunlap High School graduating in 1946. He then attended Iowa State University. On June 11, 1950, Leonard married Patricia Olsen at the United Methodist Church in Dunlap. The couple farmed and raised their family on the Bolton Farm. To this union five children were born: Linda, Bonnie, Jeff, Julie and Steve. On August 4, 1980, Leonard married Shirley Glenn at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
Leonard was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Dunlap. He was a long-time member of the Chrysolite Masonic Lodge and the Abu Bekr Shrine. Leonard had served on the Dunlap School Board for many years. He cherished his family and church. Leonard loved to snow ski in Colorado with his family. He also loved to go camping with his siblings.
Leonard died on Saturday, February 22, 2020, at the Dunlap Specialty Care Center at the age of 91 years and 17 days.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley Bolton on February 10, 2012; son, Jeffery Bolton on February 20, 2020; sister, Edna Mae Bryan; and brother, Wayne Bolton. He is survived by his children, Linda Lehan Dane and her husband Alan Dane of Omaha, Nebraska, Bonnie and her husband Bob Peterson of Omaha, Nebraska, Julie and her husband Jim Thrasher of Buckeye, Arizona, and Steve Bolton and his wife Felicia of Palm Harbor, Florida; daughter-in-law, Penny Bolton of Dunlap, Iowa; step-children, Dave Glenn and Jenneane and her husband Dan Hendon of Dunlap, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; siblings, Frances Moore of Vermillion, South Dakota, Joan and her husband Dr. James Long of Alma, Nebraska, and James Bolton of Huntsville, Alabama; and many other relatives and friends.
