Lorrene "Rene" Theresa (Kloewer) Assmann was born April 28, 1936, to Al and Eva (Peerman) Kloewer in Defiance, Iowa. She was raised in Defiance and graduated from St Paul's Catholic School. After her graduation she worked at NW Bell in Omaha for three years. Rene married Bernard "Bump" Assmann on June 22, 1957, while he was serving in the Army. For the next two years Rene worked at Southern Bell in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1958 the couple returned to farm east of Dunlap, and they continued farming until retiring in 1983. They moved into Dunlap in 1993.

Rene was a member of St Patrick's Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters. She loved playing Scrabble, working crossword puzzles, going to the casino, cooking and baking and traveling to Okoboji and Las Vegas.

Rene died on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 79 years, nine months, and 23 days.

Rene was preceded in death by her parents; son, Matt; brothers, John and Don Kloewer; and sisters, MaryAnn Meyer and Ceil Richards. She is survived by her husband, Bump of Dunlap, IA; five children, Andy (Cindy) Assmann and Tom (Karla) Assmann all of Omaha, NE, Chris (KK) Assmann of Overland Park, KS, Cindy Assmann of Omaha, NE, and Barb Lapke of Papillion, NE; daughter-in-law, Sandy Assmann of Wichita, KS; 16 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and two step grandchildren; eight siblings, Kay (Jack) Cook of Omaha, NE, "Shun" (Bob) Dotzler of Defiance, IA, Dorothy Johnston of Omaha, NE, Joan (Jack) Strudthoff of Woodstock, GA, Jane (Eldon) Meyer of Lees Summit, MO, Bob (Karen) Kloewer of Defiance, IA, Suzanne (Bert) Lehan of Marcus, IA, and Rick (Nancy) Kloewer of Defiance, IA; four siblings-in-law, Annette Kloewer and Mickey Kloewer both of Defiance, IA, Clyde Meyer of Omaha, NE, and Greg Schwery of Bella Vista, AR; and many other relatives and friends.
