Lucille Arlene (Jones) Benjamin was born April 13, 1923, in Dunlap, Iowa to Sine Marie (Pedersen) and Louis Robert Jones. She was raised in Dunlap and graduated from Dunlap High School in 1940. On July 26, 1941, she married Walter Peter Thomsen. The couple lived in Dow City, and they were blessed with two children, Ronald Eugene and Patricia Ann. Walter was killed in January of 1944 near Italy while serving in WWII. On November 8, 1947, Lucy married John Benjamin in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple lived in Dunlap. Lucy worked as a switchboard operator before the couple operated the Larsen Truck Stop and Caf� from 1958 - 1963. She later went to work for Bonsall's as a bookkeeper and salesperson. She retired from Bonsall's after working there for 17 years.
Lucy was a member of United Methodist Women and ODO (Our Day Out.) The ladies of this group met once a month at the senior center for lunch and cards. Lucy was an avid card player and played whenever she could. She also enjoyed flowers and birds. Basketball was Lucy's favorite sport, and her favorite teams were Duke, Iowa State and the Boyer Valley Bulldogs.
Lucy died Sunday, March 13, 2005, at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska attaining the age of 81 years and 11 months.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter; son, Ronald; two sisters, Marjorie Carbaugh, and NaDeane Mistakevich. She is survived by her husband, John; daughter, Pat and her husband Jack Ellis of Ames, Iowa; 6 grandchildren including Jane and her husband Chuck Hinson of Kansas City, Missouri, Ken T. "Bud" Dunham and his wife Tami of Dunlap, Iowa, Allen Thomsen of Washington; 13 great grandchildren including Jacob Behrendt of St. Joseph, Missouri, Lane Behrendt of Kansas City, Missouri, Ashli, Kenneth, and Taylor Dunham of Dunlap, Iowa; brother, Bob Jones of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
