Dunlap, Iowa

Lucille Catherine Crilly of Dunlap, Iowa, was born September 7, 1922 in Galland's Grove, Shelby County, Iowa, east of Dunlap, Iowa to Charles and Lavonna Thompson. She was the oldest child in a family of five children. Her father died in 1937 at the age of 43 after suffering over ten years with a brain tumor. Lucille and her siblings would help their mother by delivering baked goods door to door and delivering washings and ironing that their mother took in. During high school she was on the basketball team and always enjoyed watching sports on television throughout her lifetime. Lucille graduated with the Dunlap Public High School Class of 1941. On May 5, 1949, Lucille was united in marriage to Wayne Thomas (Bob) Crilly of Dunlap who was raised in Danbury, Iowa. He worked for Ed Bonsall and Laurence O'Connor as a mechanic for a few years. He then became a Standard Oil Tankwagon agent. Lucille took care of the bookkeeping for him as well as handling records for the bowling league that Bob joined. Bob died July 12, 1976 after suffering a heart attack. After his death, Lucille worked as a clerk and bookkeeper at Lehan Pharmacy in Dunlap for 13 years before retiring at the age of 71.

Lucille made an endless number of homemade cookies, rolls, cakes, bars, and candy which were always devoured by her family and the many neighborhood children. She was known for the baked good trays that she would donate to Bake Sales for St. Patrick's Church, Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center and other fund-raisers. She loved writing letters to relatives and friends and sending Birthday, Get Well and Anniversary cards. She also enjoyed feeding and watching the birds and squirrels and enjoying the flowers planted at her home.
